The Gardener of a Single Flower
Duration: 4 min
I dedicated this piece to my dear sister Smaida Māra shortly before moving to America for the first time. The original title in Portuguese was Sonhos e Sorrisos do Jardineiro de Uma Única Flor, meaning “Dreams and Smiles of the Gardener of a Single Flower.” I used to compose at my grandmother’s home at Flamengo Beach in Rio de Janeiro, where from the piano bench I could see the Sugar Loaf and other mountains across Guanabara Bay and over which the sunrise was always spectacular. This peaceful and dream-like refuge was the birthplace of most of my Carioca compositions.
